GRI Readers Choice Awards 2010 winners all from Brazil

GRI Readers Choice Awards 2010 winners are Banco do Brasil, Banco Bradesco, Vale and Natura Cosmeticos, all from Brazil. Are sustainability awards becoming the new American Idol or a national beauty pageant competition?

The GRI Readers’ Choice Awards are decided by report readers (not expert judges). In 2008, Europeans were the largest regional group of participants. In 2010, the crown obviously went to Brazil. List of winners & runners-up is provided below. For detailed information on how the finalists were determined and voting patterns, please click here.  See also my previous blog post: Are Awards a Barrier to Sustainability Reporting?

  1. […] This post was mentioned on Twitter by elaine cohen and Lavinia Weissman, Brigitte Goddemeyer. Brigitte Goddemeyer said: Agree! @WorkEcology: Appreciate quality of this report by @elainecohen: Prizma #GRI summary Reporting Awards #csr http://bit.ly/bzLKiT […]

  2. Stine says:

Maybe it would make sense to do some sort of country weighting of the votes next year? It did feel a little strange that all nominees were Brazilian… Or maybe that’s just me?

  3. I think it strikes a lot of people as odd that all the awards went to Brazil. – In my original post, I noted that – instead of expert judges – “report readers” selectyed the winners. I think that this was a wrong assumption on my side. Perhaps I should have speculated that voters (regardless if they read the reports or not) and probably mobilzied by more effective social marketing/media of the winning reporters and their advisors decided the awards. Either way, this sort of voting/award process may not add much confidence in terms of value or quality of the winning reports in eyes of the more critical “CSR nerds.” Putting the CSR nerds aside, I can just imagine how the winning companies can make a nice media release and celebrate their GRI awards…
